Sometimes they are tidal and running inland. Ours on Sheppey used to be tidal but were turned freshwater when new seawalls were built across them several hundred years ago. Unfortunately, at least 2 nests of sea turtle eggs were drowned in the long-standing water. Two other nests did have successful hatchings, though, and we await the hatching date for the last 2 nests.
